• The People of the Large Lake, now known as Lake Washington
• Both groups tell stories handed down as an oral tradition, including a tale, "North Wind, South Wind," referring to the last Ice Age and describing an ice weir (dam) collapsing on the Duwamish River.

Are Descendants of the Duwamish Still Living in or Near Tukwila?

Currently, members who identify as Duwamish are not officially recognized as a tribe by the United States government. Nevertheless, at least 600 individuals are enrolled as members and consider themselves Duwamish. They wrote and ratified a constitution, bylaws, and other legal foundations in 1925. The tribal members continue to live proudly as Duwamish, although their ancestors did not receive reservation land, even though Chief Seattle and other Duwamish leaders signed the Treaty of Point Elliott in the 1850s. The tribe bought land by the ancient settlement of Ha-AH-Poos in 2009 adjacent to the Duwamish River's mouth. Tribal members established a Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center on that location.

How Did the Duwamish Use the Land and Rivers?

Other indigenous people lived in Puget Sound-Strait of Georgia basin. They traded and perhaps intermarried with the Duwamish. Some individuals enrolled in the federally recognized Tulalip Tribes of Washington. Pre-contact villages were scattered. In the spring, the Duwamish foraged for salmonberry shoots and fiddlehead ferns. As they ripened, the people picked the following to eat fresh and to dry and combine with fat and protein (pemmican) for winter storage:

The Hop City

The city of Kent was incorporated in 1890, the second one in King County after Seattle. The name Kent was chosen because of the widespread production of Hops in the area in the 19th century and because Kent, England, was already well-known for the production of the same crop. Hops are a staple in beer production since the flower acts as an antibacterial during the production process. It also helps add bitterness and a pleasant aroma to the final product. Most of the world's supply at the time was sourced from Europe. However, in the 1860s, an aphid invasion destroyed the crops in Europe, leaving beer makers in trouble. Kent was chosen as the alternative source because of the abundance of fertile land and a valley close to a port.

The largescale production of hops introduced many changes in the area. For instance, the seasonal workers used to travel to the area to pick the crop during harvest time. The workers were from all spheres, including Native Americans, European-Americans, and Chinese. The need to transport the workers and the produce led to the development of railroads. Surprisingly the same thing that led to the boom caused the bust when aphids found their way into the area, devastating crops. However, the infrastructure remained, allowing the area to transition to other economic activities such as warehousing and manufacturing, helping sustain the locals even today. Currently, the town of Kent has a mix of an urban, suburban feel with a population estimate of slightly over 130,000 in 2019.

The teddy bears, awaiting their forever homes.

SERVPRO of Kent was fortunate enough to be invited to join Puget Sound Fire during one of their community outreach projects. 

Their goal was to facilitate interaction between children and emergency responders to build trust and raise their level of comfort. They do this by opening up the fire station and inviting children and their families. 

SERVPRO of Kent donated over 200 teddy bears for the children to keep. The children would bring the bears to a fire fighter and watch as they checked their vitals; listened to their heartbeat, checked their pulse, etc. 

It was a fun day for everyone involved, especially the kids.

Sitting in the entryway of the Advertising firm's office in Downtown Seattle, John felt a light sprinkle hit his hand as he was checking his email.

Burning food can cause odors in your home

Why does the last 5 minutes of a football game on TV seem to take an hour? You decided to make that salmon dish your uncle was telling you about so you prepped for it first thing this morning.

Start of the 4th quarter you decided to put it into the oven right as your team fell behind 14 points and the game seemed over.

That's when the magic started!  The rookie they just drafted gets put in the game and the biggest comeback in franchise history starts.

They tie up the game with 10 seconds left as the wide receiver torched the defender.  Torched him so bad you can smell the burning as if you were there.

Blocked Drains after Heavy Rains = Great Pains

Looking back at the month of February, the wind and cold seemed to dominate the weather.  The Seattle Area experiences it’s first drier than normal month since September.  

January, howevere, experienced much wetter-than-normal conditions as over 8 inches fell onto the roofs of Seattle.  The normal for the month of January is just shy of 6 inches.

The extra rain in January, coupled with winds, meant several building owners were performing inspections to make sure the drain vents weren’t clogged and holding water.

Several times throughout the year SERVPRO clients will call when a blockage on their roof suddenly clears and overflows into the building.

Always check your roof/gutters after a particularly windy storm to make sure your drainage system is running smoothly.

Sometimes your Kitchen just needs to Vent

We’ve all been there, it seemed like a good idea to cook the bacon on High heat but that Text from a friend or the person that distracted us from our stove was enough to make it happen.

“It” is that smell that enters your nostrils that makes your hard race as you run to the stove and turn down the heat.  As you fan smoke away from the pan you realize you’re spreading this smoke into other parts of the kitchen.  You reach for the fan and turn it on for the first time in a while.  

Cranking the knob up to high you look over at the smoke detector and the race is on.

“Will the fan suck up the smoke before it gets to the smoke detector and informs everyone in the house you’ve just burned the bacon?”

The Kitchen Fan is mostly a Reactive function in the kitchen.  It rarely gets turned on until smoke comes out of a pan or that pot of water starts to fog up the room.  

The perfect time to turn on the fan is actually Before you turn on the stove and start cooking.

The main purpose of the fan is to eliminate heat and odors from the cooking that you’re doing. The moisture and odors tend to stick to the walls of your kitchen.

Cleaning Hi Traffic Surfaces in your Office Building

Sitting in the waiting room at her Architect’s office, Jessica grabbed a magazine that was sitting on a table.  She read an article  the importance of cleaning “high traffic hard surfaces”  in commercial buildings.  The article showed several examples of hard surfaces that are commonly overlooked when commercial spaces are casually cleaned.

With summer now in full swing, it's time to consider how to keep your lawn and garden it tip top shape while also considering how to keep your water bill down. Here are a few tips from Popular Mechanics on how (http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/lawn-garden/how-to/g559/9-water-conserving-tips-for-summer-gardening/):

• Don't over water - a good rule of thumb is that a lawn needs 1 inch of water a week and perennial plants and shrubs will need from 1 inch to 2 inches a week. When in doubt, keep the plant's soil lightly moist and see how it responds. Over-watering is just as bad as under-watering; it leads to root rot and soil compaction that robs the roots of air.
• Water in the morning - If you water while it's (relatively) cool outside, water can soak in before it evaporates on the surface. And if you do it in the morning, that helps the plant to take up the water during the day. 
• Don't waste water - Don't soak the plant's foliage; it does little good. If you see water puddling or running off, stop; let the water soak in before resuming. Likewise, water that runs off your lawn or off the top of a flower bed onto paved surfaces does no good. The same applies to running lawn sprinklers: Water your lawn, not the side of your house or the driveway.
